Facts About Shahid Beheshti University

The Shahid Beheshti University (SBU) in Tehran, Tehran Province, Iran, is one of the top universities in the country. Founded in 1959, it currently operates four campuses. Its main campus is in the Evin District and extends to the Velenjak District. The Ekbatan Campus, Zirab Campus, and the Abbaspour School of Engineering make up the other three campuses.

The institution first took on the name National University of Iran when it was founded in 1959. At the time, it only offered graduate study courses. It was only during the Cultural Revolution that it took on its current name to commemorate Mohammad Beheshti, the influential figure. Shahid is added as an honorific. Since its inception, it had produced notable figures in their fields. They include Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the former prime minister of Iran, and Ahmad Khatami, the famous professor of Persian language.

Today, Shahid Beheshti University operates four faculties. They include the Faculties of (1) Engineering, (2) Social Sciences, (3) Humanities, and (4) Natural Sciences. Each has its own respective departments offering specialized courses. Course offerings include those for Nuclear Engineering, Mathematical Sciences, Letters and Humanities, and Sports Sciences and Health, among many others.

The university is also active in research. Efforts are being led by university research centers. These include the prestigious Center for Cyberspace Research, Laser and Plasma Research Institute, the Institute for Cognitive and Brain Sciences, and the Automated Software Engineering Research Group. Also, the university is working in close coordination with the Ministry of Science and Technology and other universities in a wide range of research areas. Research areas range from the natural sciences to the humanities.

Through the SBU’s International Academic Collaboration Office, the university engages in cooperative learning and research projects with other institutions around the world. The office also provides faculty members with a chance to conduct research and educational courses outside the country. It also works on getting more international conferences to be held on campus.

Moreover, the university is also active in shaping future entrepreneurs. With its business incubation support services, the right skills and connections get to the right people. This is spearheaded by the Shahid Beheshti University Technology Units Incubator. It offers stakeholders pre-incubation and incubation research facilities, rental facilities, laboratories, specialized workshops, and connections with research centers. Additionally, in order to create a link between the university and industry, SBU opened the University Science and Research Park in 2002.
