Facts About University of Maribor

The University of Maribor is the second-largest and oldest university in Slovenia. Located in the second-largest city in the country, Maribor, the university is known as one of the leading higher education institutions in central and eastern Europe. It is also ranked among the top 5% of universities around the globe.

Although officially founded in 1975, the University of Maribor traces its roots back to 1859 when Slovenian patriot and then Maribor bishop Anton Martin Slomšek campaigned for the establishment of a theological seminary in the area. Between the late 1950s and early 1960s, more faculties were added to the seminary. Besides theology, the institution started offering courses in business, economics, technology, agronomy, law, and pedagogy. With more specialties and programs added to its list of offerings, the institution eventually took a university status. On September 15, 1975, the University of Maribor held its official opening ceremony.

Today, the University of Maribor is composed of 17 faculties. These include the Faculties of Arts, Education, Law, Medicine, Health Sciences, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Economics and Business, and Energy Technology, to name a few. Among the 17 faculties are four that operate outside the main campus in Maribor. The Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, for instance, is in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Organizational Sciences is in Kranj. The Faculty of Tourism operates from the campus in Brežice. The Faculty of Logistics, on the other hand, has two locations in Celje and Krško, respectively.

The university also runs several academic and student facilities, including the Maribor University Library, the Postgraduate and Visiting Faculty Home, the Leon Štukelj Sporting Center, the Computing Center, and a number of student dormitories.

Considered a regional developer, the University of Maribor encourages active participation among its students and faculty in the promotion and protection of the Slovenian language, culture, heritage, and identity. At the same time, it also facilitates international cooperation to keep the university in line with global education trends. With around 18,000 students, the university aims to develop and nurture partnerships with public and private institutions to enrich its teaching, research, and creative capacity. Its undergraduate and postgraduate study programs are all designed to empower students and turn them into educated and engaged citizens of the country who recognize civic responsibility and who are willing to contribute to the greater public good.
