Facts About Purdue University

Purdue University is a public research institution situated in the small city of West Lafayette, Indiana. Considered as the main campus of the Purdue University system, it is highly regarded as one of the world's best universities for engineering and adjacent subjects. Organized into 10 schools and colleges, the university offers undergraduate and graduate programs in over 211 areas of study.

Founded in 1869 by the American industrialist John Purdue, the university is one of the four traditional campuses that make up the Purdue University system. In 1874, the university opened its doors to 39 students and six instructors as an industrial college devoted to providing a broad and liberal education quality with a strong focus on agriculture, science, and technology.

Towards the end of the 19th century, programs in medicine, home economics, and education were soon established, and the university was then organized into schools of pharmacy, engineering, and agriculture. For half a century, Purdue University had the largest undergraduate engineering enrollment in the country, earning a reputation of being a world-class higher education institution.

As the pioneer university that established the first college credit offered in flight training, Purdue University also played an integral role in the history of United States aviation. It is the first university in the country that offered a four-year bachelor’s degree in aviation, making it one of the most renowned institutions for aeronautical engineering and aviation technology programs.

Throughout the years, the university has produced a number of celebrated astronauts, including Neil Armstrong, Gus Crissom, and Eugene Cernan. The Purdue Research Foundation also funded the Lockheed Electra 10-E, an all-metal monoplane airliner flown by aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart on her tragic round-the-world flight attempt.

Purdue University began to expand its academic opportunities in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Some of the programs it offered include industrial management, nursing, and veterinary medicine. The university is also home to the first computer science department in America. Moreover, undergraduate humanities courses were soon established, as well as programs in liberal arts and education.

As a top-ranked public research institution, Purdue University is dedicated to providing the highest standards of education and research excellence. Committed to creating and sustaining an inclusive community within the campus, the university has a number of resources, cultural centers, and diversity programs that bring together a diverse population of students. Throughout the year, the university holds various activities and campus traditions that aim to support, connect, and inspire the Purdue community.
