Facts About University of Namur

The University of Namur, or Université de Namur in French, is a private nonprofit university located within the French Community of Belgium. A Jesuit Catholic institution, the university is known for its ethical, human-centered, and meaningful teaching, coupled with value-based interdisciplinary research. Its main campus is located in Namur, Wallonia, Belgium. The campus is home to the university building, university libraries, and six primary faculties.

The university’s history goes back to 1831 when the Society of Jesus reestablished a high school in Namur. The school quickly grew into a college, gathering support and sponsorship from prominent families in the city. The sponsors had their requests followed as an exchange for their support of the project. The most important of these conditions was for the school to teach sciences, including philosophy. It should also uphold the liberty of education as stated in the then-new Belgian Constitution. Expansions and developments over the last century have made the university as it is known today: a prestigious university to study at in Belgium.

Also called simply as UNamur, the university offers undergraduate and graduate programs across six faculties: Arts; Sciences; Law; Medicine; Computer Science; and Economics, Social Sciences, and Business Administration. UNamur offers over 20 bachelor’s degrees, around 15 master’s degrees, at least three specialized/advanced master’s degrees, and almost 20 doctorate/PhD degrees. The university uses French as the primary language of instruction, but there are five programs available in English: Master in Economics, Master in Chemistry, Master in Molecular Microbiology, Master in Biomedical Sciences, and Specialised Master in International and Development Economics.

As part of the ERASMUS network, UNamur accepts exchange students from other institutions from other countries. It has established a long list of partnerships and affiliations with international colleges and universities, paving the way for beneficial faculty and institutional agreements. UNamur has partner institutions in a number of countries, including the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Switzerland, India, and Malaysia, to name a few.

Furthermore, UNamur also maintains a strong research reputation. As of 2018, it has 11 research institutes that support its almost 1,000 researchers. UNamur also runs nine technology platforms and has already given birth to 17 spin-offs. At UNamur, researchers work on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research projects utilizing modern techniques and state-of-the-art equipment. UNamur strives to strike the right balance between applied and fundamental research.

Welcoming almost 5,000 students, UNamur has already produced several notable alumni. These include Prime Minister Jean-Luc Deheane, historian Andries Van den Abeele, and Heineken International CEO Jean-François van Boxmeer.
