Facts About University of Lille

The University of Lille (ULille) is a public university located in the city of Lille in Northern France. The university was established in 1559 and is the main organization that makes up the COMUE or Community of Universities and Institutions Lille Nord de France—the group of higher education institutions in the Hauts-de-France region.

ULille’s academic units consist of 24 schools and divisions. These fall under six major disciplines, namely Humanities and Social Sciences; Arts, Literature, and Languages; Law, Economics, and Management; Science and Technology; Sports; and Health.

It has five campuses and is the largest university in the country with about 67,000 students. It is also one of the world’s largest French-speaking universities and is well represented in the research community with over 60 research laboratories and an estimated 3,000 scientific published works annually.

Its five campuses are spread across the Lille Metropolis, each one hosting specific disciplines. The Campus Cité Scientifique, for example, is the campus dedicated to science and technology, while the Campus Santé is home to health sciences and medical courses. It is also the site of the CHU Lille University Hospital, which is Europe’s largest university hospital complex occupying almost 350 hectares. The rest of the three campuses are Campus Moulins - Ronchin for management, law, and sports; Campus Pont de Bois for Arts, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Literature and Languages; and the Campus Roubaix - Tourcoing, which houses several educational institutions for management, technology, and applied foreign languages.

Though originally founded in 1559 with roots going back to the University of Douai, ULille was reestablished in 2018 with the merger of three other schools—Lille 1 (University of Science and Technology), Lille 2 (University of Health and Law, and Lille 3 (Charles de Gaulle University of humanities, social sciences, literature and arts).

Today, ULille is a university marked with high research activity. It works with other schools and research centers such as the Pasteur Institute of Lille; the National Institute of Health and Medical Research; and the National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation. It is also a member of the Coordination of French Research-Intensive Universities (French: La Coordination des universités de recherche intensive françaises [CURIF]), which is the body that promotes research cooperation among universities in the country.

ULille’s notable alumni include mathematician Émile Borel; landscape painter Paul Pascal; and geographer Raoul Blanchard.
