Umeå University
Umeå University is a comprehensive research university located at the doorsteps of the fashionable city of Umeå, Sweden. Formally founded in 1965, it is the flagship university in Northern Sweden and the country's fifth oldest institution for higher education. Even better, the school is ranked in the top 1% of universities in world rankings. The university is also renowned for its highly-ranked Institute of Design and its distinguished research into the genome of Norway Spruce and Populus tree.
The university began as a provisional institution and a spin-off from already established institutions in 1947. Initially, the idea to open the university in Northern Sweden was rejected. However, after years of commitment from doctors, dentists, politicians, and locals, the institution was finally inaugurated in 1965. Through strategic growth and development, backed by collaborative and distinctly non-hierarchical culture, the university quickly morphed into a world-class institution.
Today, the university has four campuses. Campus Umeå, which is located by the Ume River, is the university’s headquarters and it is where the majority of the administration, learning, and research take place. Also situated by the river is the Umeå Arts Campus—home to the famous Institute of Design, Sliperiet Creative Hub, and the world-renowned Bildmuseet Museum of Contemporary Art. In addition, there are other campuses in the neighboring Örnsköldsvik and Skellefteå cities.
Umeå University is organized around four faculties; Medicine, Arts and Humanities, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences. These are further subdivided into 39 departments and units. In addition, there are seven schools and institutes and 17 research centers that are created to facilitate high-quality research and education. Even better, the university works with 399 partner institutions in 51 countries and it has more than 900 exchange program agreements.
The university offers 150 programs of study including undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree programs. Moreover, there are about 1,800 courses provided at Umeå University including single-subject courses. While most of the programs are taught in Swedish, there are over 40 programs and 450 courses taught entirely in English. Nearly all the English-based programs and courses take place in Campus Umeå and at Umeå Arts Campus.
Umeå University is home to more than 34,700 students drawn from 60 countries in the world. To support students' academic and research endeavors, the university has over 4,063 employees, which include more than 350 professors and over 2,100 researchers and teachers. Lastly, the university has over 300,000 alumni who can be found in more than 100 countries.
