Facts About Waseda University
Waseda University is a progressive private research university located in Shinjuku-ku, in the heart of Tokyo, Japan. Established in 1882, the university seeks to conduct world-class research and disseminate knowledge to produce graduates who are flexibly sensitive and intellectual, resilient global leaders. Holding its founding principles firm, it has morphed into one of the most prestigious and academically selective universities in Japan.
At the outset, the university was started by Japanese Statesman Shigenobu Okuma as the Tokyo Senmon Gakko (College) with four departments: English, Law, Political Science, and Physical Science. In 1902, when it was granted university status, it changed its name to Waseda University. At the time, it comprised three undergraduate schools, one graduate school, and seven junior colleges.
At present, the university has seven campuses in Tokyo and two in Saitama. The campuses are home to the university’s 10 faculties: Law, Commerce, Political Science and Economics, Letter, Arts, and Sciences; Education, Integrated Arts, and Sciences, Social Science, Engineering, Human Sciences, Sport Sciences, and International Research and Education.
These faculties are divided into schools and institutes, including 13 undergraduate and 20 graduate schools that focus on diverse high-quality academic subjects. Most of the programs are taught in Japanese, but seven of the undergraduate and 14 of the graduate programs use English as the primary language of instruction. These English-language degrees enable Waseda University to collaborate more effectively with other institutions around the world.
The university is renowned for its excellence in academics and research. It’s therefore not surprising that 11 of its subjects are ranked among the best in the world. These include Humanities and Arts, Engineering, Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, Management, and Social Sciences, to name a few.
These programs, as well as the university’s ingrained culture and traditions, are the top reasons it attracts about 50,000 students yearly. Within this number, 8,200 are enrolled in graduate schools and over 7,400 international students. The students are supported by over 5,400 high-caliber faculty members tasked with imparting knowledge and skills to produce world-beaters.
In addition, the university provides the facilities and resources students need to excel. For instance, the Waseda University library is regarded as one of Japan’s largest libraries, thanks to its collection of over 4.5 million volumes and more than 46,000 serials.
The alumni base exemplifies Waseda University’s exemplary work in delivering high-quality education. More than 10,000 of the institution’s 600,000 alumni have gone on to become Chief Executive Officer’s and presidents in multinational organizations across the globe. Some of these notable names include Nobuyuki Idei (former Sony CEO), Tadashi Yanai (CEO of UNIQLO), Norio Sasaki (former Toshiba’s CEO), and Shuntaro Furukawa (current President of Nintendo). Besides, seven former prime ministers of Japan are Waseda University graduates.Read Less...
