Facts About University of Messina

The University of Messina, also known as Università degli Studi di Messina or UNIME, is one of the oldest universities in Italy. It was established by Pope John Paul III in 1548 and formally began its activities in 1596. It is also the world’s first Jesuit college, thus serving as a model for other Jesuit universities established in later years. Today, it is affiliated with the European University Association and is accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education.

The university offers undergraduate and graduate studies across its 12 departments, among which are unique degree courses in ancient and modern civilization, human pathology of the adult and developmental age "Gaetano Barresi," morphological and functional imaging science, pedagogical and cultural studies, and other programs in a broad range of fields. It also offers single-cycle master’s degree programs in pharmacy, law, veterinary medicine, dentistry and dental prosthesis, medicine, and pharmaceutical chemistry and technology.

Throughout the centuries, the University of Messina is famed for having a notable list of esteemed historical figures and scholars, such as Giovanni Pascoli (an Italian poet), Gaetano Salvemini (anti-fascist politician, historian, and writer), and Marcello Malpighi (biologist and physician known for pioneering microscopical anatomy, histology, physiology and embryology). ,

The university is spread across four campus sites in Messina, Sicily. The main campus, locally known as Polo Centrale, is geographically situated at the center of Messina and is home to administrative buildings and four faculties—Law, Economics, Political Science and Education. The faculties of Sciences and Engineering, meanwhile, are located in Polo Papardo, which overlooks the Strait of Messina. The Faculties of Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, and Humanities are found in the Polo Annunziata facility, while the Faculty of Medicine lies within the premises of Policlinico G. Martino, the main hospital of the city.

Students of the University of Messina benefit from basic amenities, such as study spaces, departmental libraries, laboratories, and classrooms. It also has a sports center where a range of indoor and outdoor sports events are held every year. Moreover, the university serves as home to the Orto Botanico di Messina, a botanical garden established in 1638 by Italian botanist and physician Pietro Castelli.

Year by year, the university sees growth in its international mobility activities. As an active participant in the Erasmus+ program, the university takes part in student exchange programs that foster a collaborative sharing of knowledge, culture, and innovative ideas. In support of internationalization, the institution also carries out a coherent strategy aimed at maintaining global academic excellence and developing world-class research outputs.
