Facts About Nicolaus Copernicus University
Also known as NCU, the Nicolaus Copernicus University is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Poland. It is located in Toruń, a historic city in the north-central region of the country. NCU is recognized as one of Poland’s top five universities not only because of the quality of teaching but also because of its research profile.
NCU is home to sophisticated research facilities dedicated to molecular physics, optics, astronomy, and other fields. Among these facilities are the Center for Quantum Optics; the National Laboratory of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (FAMO); and the Interdisciplinary Center for Modern Technologies. NCU also has off-campus facilities, such as the Center for Astronomy located in Piwnice, a village where a one-of-a-kind radio telescope is situated. Another is the NCU Polar Station located at Spitsbergen, a location in the Arctic Sea. NCU also houses three medical faculties at Collegium Medicum UMK located in Bydgoszcz.
Aside from having some of the world’s best research facilities, NCU also takes pride in its research accomplishments. One of them is the NCU researchers’ success in making a significant contribution to the advancement of conducting medical eye examinations by designing and building a state-of-the-art instrument called the Optical Coherence Tomography.
When it comes to academic offerings, NCU has a total of 17 faculties that administer a wide range of courses in various fields of study. Students who would like to be part of NCU can choose from programs that are related to biology, chemistry, earth sciences, medicine, astronomy, and others. It is also important to note that NCU’s degree programs can be completed within three years. Also, the undergraduate degrees are not called bachelor’s degrees but licentiate degrees, which is the former’s equivalent. Moreover, instead of a master’s degree, NCU has a magister degree, a five-year, course-based degree program equivalent to the regular master’s degree.
Established in 1945, NCU has come a long way from its humble beginnings. From being an institution that was established to cater to local students, NCU is now open to the world as it welcomes international students and collaborators. NCU has partners from different parts of the world, such as Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Denmark, and more. By establishing strong partnerships with external organizations, NCU has managed to secure enough resources for new and ongoing research projects. One of the most ambitious, thus far, is the “ultra-stable optical oscillators from quantum coherent and entangled systems” (USOQS).
