Facts About Leibniz University of Hannover

Known as the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover in German, the Leibniz University Hannover is a public research institution located in Hanover, the largest city in the state of Lower Saxony in the northwestern region of Germany. Nestled in the heart of “the greenest big city” in the country, the Leibniz University Hannover makes sustainability a key part of its research efforts.

Over the years, the university has played key roles in conducting research in the fields of biomedical science, quantum optics, optical technologies, production engineering, and interdisciplinary science. The university’s Quantum Optics and Gravitational Physics research has placed first in one of the distinguished research foundations in Germany, the DFG Funding Atlas. The Leibniz University Hannover has also been the recipient of grants from the European Research Council for its innovative and visionary research works.

As an academic institution, the Leibniz University Hannover offers programs that are available in three languages of instruction—German, English, and Spanish. The programs offered are divided into nine faculties that administer a broad range of fields of study, including architecture and landscape sciences, civil engineering and geodetic science, law, humanities, mathematics and physics, and more. The university also offers teacher training courses with specializations in grammar, vocational, and special needs education.

Before the Leibniz University Hannover became one of Germany’s leading institutes of technology with more than 30,000 students, it was first a vocational school that bore the name Higher Trade School of Hannover with only 64 pupils. It was founded in 1831 by Karl Karmarsch, an Austrian-born German scholar and educator, thus making it one of the oldest universities in the country that heavily focuses on teaching science and technology. By 1879, the school was renamed the Royal College of Technology. It was around this time when the institution moved to Welfenschloss, which was specifically renovated for the institution. Two decades later, the Royal College of Technology was given the right to grant doctorate degrees and be recognized as being in the same level as universities.

The Royal College of Technology became the University of Hannover in 1978 and ushered in another era of expansion and development geared toward modernization and internationalization. The restructuring of the university began with the addition of the faculty of Computer Science. In July 2006, during the celebration of its 175th year of existence, the university was renamed Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University Hannover in honor of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, a German polymath during the Age of Enlightenment.
