Facts About University of Newcastle

The University of Newcastle (UON) is a public university located in the city of Newcastle in the Australian state of New South Wales. Established in 1965, UON is a top-ranked university for its engineering, medicine, education, arts and humanities, and science programs. It developed and introduced the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test, which is now widely accepted in medical schools in the country.

UON has a vast network of campuses in the Newcastle central business district and other regional offices. It also maintains a campus in Sydney and an international campus in Singapore. UON has 12 schools housed in five faculties: The Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment; Faculty of Science, Faculty of Business and Law, Faculty of Education and Arts, and the Faculty of Health. Several of its schools include the School of Electrical Engineering and Computing, School of Nursing and Midwifery, and the School of Humanities and Social Science.

Students can choose from undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in study areas such as Accounting and Finance, Communication and Creative Industries, Science and the Environment, Education, and Engineering. Though founded in 1965 with its current name, the University of Newcastle’s origins go back to 1951 with the establishment of the Newcastle University College (NUC). NUC was a branch of the New South Wales University of Technology (now named the University of New South Wales). Newcastle residents pushed for the independence of UON and successfully accomplished their goal when UON was given autonomy in 1965.

Today, the University of Newcastle has built its reputation as a top university not only in Australia but also abroad. It regularly ranks in national university and global rankings, such as the QS World University Rankings.
