Facts About Örebro University

Örebro University (Örebro Universitet) is a public university in Örebro, Sweden. Its predecessor, Örebro University College, was established in 1977 when four institutions in the city were merged—Uppsala University (Örebro branch), College of Social Sciences, College of Physical Education and Sport Science, and Preschool Teaching Seminary. In 1999, Örebro University College became Örebro University, making it the 12th institution of higher learning in the country.

The university comprises three faculties, namely, the Faculty of Medicine and Health, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Faculty of Business, Science, and Engineering. Under these faculties are several schools that are seven in total. These are the School of Business, School of Science and Technology, School of Music, Theatre and Art, School of Law, Psychology and Social work, School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, School of Health and Medical Sciences, and School of Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Meal Science.

At Örebro, around 700 courses are offered through its numerous undergraduate and postgraduate programs. For instance, its AACSB-accredited School of Business offers programs in statistics, informatics, economics, and business administration. Likewise, its School of Science and Technology offers over a dozen study programs, including robotics and intelligent systems and chemistry in environmental forensics.

To facilitate the learning needs of international students, several bachelor’s and master’s programs are offered in English. These include subjects such as Statistics, Sociology, Political Science, Medicine, Mathematics, Human Geography, Education, Computer Science, Business Administration, and Biology.

The university’s research covers more than 36 different subjects across four research environments, namely: business, science, and engineering; humanities and social sciences; medicine and health; and teacher education. These diverse research topics are conducted in its many research centers and institutes, which include the Swedish Institute for Disability Research, Inflammatory Response and Infection Susceptibility Center, Cardiovascular Research Center, Center for Feminist Studies, and Center for Empirical Research on Organizational Control.

Örebro University has three campuses—Campus Örebro (main), Campus USÖ, and Campus Grythyttan—and one study area in Congrego. The main campus houses the most number of facilities, which include the University Library, administrative offices, dormitories, restaurants, and a gym. Campus USÖ has the University Hospital and the Clinical Research Center, while Campus Grythyttan is where the Nordic House of Culinary Art and the School of Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Meal Science are situated.

Through the years, the university has produced a number of notable alumni who excelled in their fields of expertise. These include former Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson, members of Swedish Parliament Fredrick Federley, Elisabeth Svantesson, and Sten Tolgfors, member of the European Parliament Lars Adaktusson, Telia CEO Johan Dennelind, and Olympic medalist Ulrika Knape.
