Facts About University of Insubria

The University of Insubria (Università degli Studi dell'Insubria) is a state-supported university with locations in Como, Varese, Busto Arsizio, and Saronno in Italy. The university was established in 1998. Among a wide array of academic programs, its law degree is well-cited, ranking among the top 10 in the country.

The university’s academic facilities, administrative offices, and laboratories are spread throughout its different locations in the Lombardy region. The Como and Varese campuses act as the main sites housing the main facilities and offices including the university hospital in Varese and the Faculty of Communication Sciences.

The undergraduate programs typically run for 3 years. These include courses in biological sciences, chemical sciences and technologies and biotechnology. Similarly, degrees in computer science, engineering for work and environment safety, as well as in physics and mathematics, require a 3-year period to complete. Other bachelor’s degrees are environment and natural sciences, communication sciences, linguistic and cultural mediation.

The University of Insubria also offers undergraduate programs in healthcare. Courses include physiotherapy, nursing, midwifery, cardiocirculatory and cardiovascular perfusion techniques. These, too, require 3 years of study.

Graduate studies run for 2 years. Students can pursue master’s in biomedical sciences, computer science environmental sciences, economics, finance, and business law. Physics, mathematics, science, and technical communication likewise have their graduate programs. Degrees in law, medicine and surgery and dentistry, meantime, follow a 6-year academic cycle.

The university is a place-of-interest, too, for historians and artists. It houses a 16th-century palace, the Palazzo Natta, which belonged to a noble family of Como. Artifacts that date back to the 13th century are known to be found in the palace, as well. Likewise, the university is home to one of the earliest basilicas in Europe, the Cloister of Sant’Abbondio in Como, which today houses the Department of Law, Economics, and Cultures.

The University of Insubria traces its origins back to several merges of colleges and schools that had served other universities in the region. In 1972, a university center extension for the University of Pavia was opened in Varese. Likewise, engineering courses have originated from Politecnico of Milan since 1989. Then in 1990, the University of Milan established its extension colleges in Como for its Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Economics. In July 1998, the University of Insubria was given its charter as its own university.
