Through its early career researcher programs, the university partners with different institutions to allow graduate school students to pursue research that is relevant to their field and to the labor market.
RUB was borne out of the decision of the Parliament of North Rhine Westphalia to put up a university for the Federal Republic of Germany in Bochum. The university was officially inaugurated in 1965. In 1999, RUB put up the Akademie der Ruhr-Universität (advanced training academy), adding further education as its third core competence. In April 2007, RUB embarked on a comprehensive campus redevelopment plan starting with the construction of the ID building. In the following years, a series of research departments and institutes were put up which has allowed RUB to focus on its thrust on research.
Notable alumni from RUB include Hans-Holger Albrecht, the CEO of music streaming service Deezer; Hans-Paul Bürkner, the first European CEO of Boston Consulting Group; and Thomas Derken, also known as “Afu” Thomas, an internet personality in China.
RUB has placed in the top 250 to 500 ranges among world universities, according to different academic ranking publications. In addition, RUB’s Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries (Casa) and Ruhr Explores Solvation (Resolv) clusters have been awarded as Clusters of Excellence supported by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft or DFG) . This will allow RUB to receive funding from the DFG for seven years and open up the clusters to regional and international partners. . It will also allow the university to apply as a University of Excellence later on for it to receive annual government funding for promoting cutting-edge research in Germany.
As part of its expansion plans, RUB has secured a multimillion subsidy for its Worldfactory Start-up Center. The university will work together with the Ministry for Economy, Innovation, Digitization and Energy to build a new technology campus featuring space for an open workshop called the Makerspace.
