The University of Patras (UPatras), or Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών, Panepistímio Patrón in Greek, is a public university in Western Greece. It is the country’s third-largest university based on the size of student, faculty, and staff population, as well as the number of departments.
The University of Patras was founded on November 11, 1964. It was established as a self-administered higher education institution under the supervision of the government. In 2013, it merged with the University of Western Greece. Meanwhile, in 2019, it merged with the Technological Educational Institute of Western Greece. This merger resulted in the university having two main campuses in Patras and Messolonghi. The university also has four satellite campuses/facilities in Aigio, Agrinio, Amaliada, and Pyrgos.
The university is composed of seven schools: (1) School of Natural Sciences, (2) School of Health Sciences, (3) School of Engineering, (4) School of Humanities and Social Sciences, (5) School of Economics and Business, (6) School of Agricultural Sciences, and (7) School of Health Rehabilitation Sciences. These schools are divided into 35 departments, each focusing on a more specific field of study. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as online and open courses.
The University of Patras has also gained recognition for its excellence in basic and applied research. UPatras operates over 160 fully equipped laboratories and clinics in total. Through these facilities, UPatras has conducted pioneering studies in a wide range of disciplines, including health, environment, biotechnology, electronics, and informatics, among others. Many of its laboratories, clinics, and departments are also considered centers of excellence in their respective focus fields, based on international assessment qualifications.
With its excellent educational reputation and outstanding research work, UPatras attracts many student candidates annually. As of 2020, the university accommodates more than 20,000 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students. Meanwhile, its faculty members, teaching staff, and administrative personnel are estimated to be about 1,500.
Since its establishment, the university has been committed to providing comprehensive and innovative instruction and research. It also upholds a mission to contribute to society. As such, it plays a role in development initiatives that benefit Western Greece. Furthermore, UPatras also maintains an international stature.
