Facts About Singapore Management University

The Singapore Management University (SMU) is an autonomous university located in downtown Singapore. Founded in 2000, it takes pride in its rigorous, multidisciplinary research methodologies that tackle Asian issues with global relevance. As a premier university, its vision is to be known around the globe for its research and teaching. On the other hand, its mission is to generate and spread knowledge, mold leaders for the knowledge-based economy, provide an interactive learning experience, and foster an environment where teachers and students can excel.

SMU offers undergraduate programs in law, economics, accountancy, social science, computer science, computing and law, information systems, and business management. It also has masteral programs in law, economics, accountancy, information system, and business management. Working professionals can choose from over 400 courses in the university’s SMU Academy, while managers can opt to take any of the SMU Executive Development (EXD) programs.

Though it was officially founded in 2000, SMU sees its conceptualization and organization dating as far back as 1997. The planning team was composed of former employees of the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.

In June of 2000, SMU opened a business school. The schools of accountancy and economics and social sciences soon followed. In 2005, the university moved from its Bukit Timah campus to its city campus in Bras Basah. A school of law was created two years later. In 2015, SMU launched innovative programs like SMU-X curriculum featuring American-style interactive education.

Notable alumni from SMU include swimmer and Southeast Asian games medalist Russell Ong, Singaporean actress Rebecca Lim, and Indian singer Adithya Srinivasan.

Despite being in existence for only 20 years, SMU has been recognized for the quality of its programs. Its masteral programs in wealth management and IT in business have received top-tier rankings among Asian universities. Globally, it has received placement within the top 500 to 800 universities by various academic ranking publications.

Currently, SMU is embarking on realizing its Vision 2025 goal of being a world-class global city university that takes on the world’s challenges and impacts society in a positive way. With this, it has chosen a three-point strategy centered on digital transformation, sustainable living, and contribution to Asia’s growth. To this end, it has recently launched the Singapore Green Finance Center, the first institute that will focus on sustainable investment and talent development. The institute will conduct research that will guide policymakers and financial institutions in Asia to shift to a low-carbon future.
