The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) is the flagship school of the University of Texas and is a Public Ivy. Classified as an R1 University, the public school is known for its high research output, with its efforts largely concentrated on physical sciences, engineering, and computer science. It is also home to the third-largest telescope in the world.

UT Austin has a total of over 1400 acres, with its main campus spanning more than 400 acres and having around 150 buildings. It furnishes over 100 undergraduate degrees, 170 graduate programs, and a good number of doctorate and professional programs. To reward students with exceptional marks, the university has eight honors programs in various fields, namely business, computer science, engineering, natural sciences, and a combination of all disciplines taken.

Its top-notch programs aside, the facilities at UT Austin are also world-class and sometimes characterized by remarkable architecture. It runs the seventh-largest library system in the United States, having over 15 libraries and carrying more than 9 million volumes. The school also has around seven museums, which include the country’s biggest university art museum, the Blanton Museum of Art. In addition, it has a six-mile tunnel system that connects some of the campus buildings, a bus transport system, campus radio stations, a 10,000-square-meter student activity center, a natural gas cogeneration plant, and a nuclear reactor.

Founded in 1887, UT Austin began as a sentiment enshrined into law in 1876, stating that a first-class university promoting the expansion of knowledge in literature, the arts, and sciences is to be established in Texas. The university opened with just one building that housed 221 pupils, educated by eight professors.

As of 2020, UT Austin has grown to host one of the biggest student communities in the country. It has over 50,000 enrolled students, more than 3,500 professors, and over 11,000 administrative personnel. In addition, the school has a network of around half a million alumni. Known for its diversity, the university has a large international contingent coming from over 120 countries, which include Korea, China, Mexico, Taiwan, and India.

Notably, UT Austin is associated with 13 Nobel laureates, four Pulitzer Prizes, and several winners of the Turing Award, Wolf Prize, Abel prize, and Fields medal as of 2020. Moreover, the school has a long list of successful alumni that includes Laura Bush (U.S. first lady), Robert Rodriguez (director), Renee Zellweger (actress), Roger Clemens (baseball player), and Lloyd Bentsen (U.S. senator).

As an organization, UT Austin leverages research, scholarly inquiries, and the development of new knowledge for the advancement of society and the benefit of Texas’ economy. Besides academics, the university also has a renowned athletics program that has produced multiple NCAA championships in basketball, football, swimming, and diving.
