Facts About University of Vigo
The University of Vigo is a public autonomous university. Known as Universidade de Vigo in Galician, its main campus is located in the industrial city of Vigo in Pontevedra province, which is part of the autonomous community of Galicia in Spain. It continues to hold a strong position among the top institutions for higher learning in the country.
Officially, the University of Vigo was established in 1990. However, its history goes back decades prior. In the early 1980s, the University of Santiago de Compostela established satellite campuses in A Coruña and Vigo. Later in the decade, the two campuses became independent universities. The campus in A Coruña became the University of A Coruña. Meanwhile, the one in Vigo became the University of Vigo.
Today, the University of Vigo has three campuses: the main campus in Vigo and the campuses in downtown Pontevedra and Ourense. The main campus is home to 15 faculties and schools. Meanwhile, the campus located in A Xunqueira, Pontevedra, is composed of six faculties. The Ourense campus, on the other hand, has seven schools.
All three campuses offer a diverse variety of programs in Sciences, Liberal Arts, Education, Business, Technology, Engineering, Medicine, and Law. For instance, the campus in Vigo has the School of Industrial Engineering, the Faculty of Legal and Labor Sciences, and the Faculty of Biology. The campus in downtown Pontevedra has the School of Nursing, Faculty of Fine Arts, and the Faculty of Forest Engineering. The campus in Ourense has the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Business and Tourism Studies, as well as the School of Computer Engineering.
The University of Vigo also runs a medical center that caters to the health and medical needs of the university community. It also takes pride in being the only Spanish university to have launched two microsatellites into space.
As for admissions, the university requires applicants to pass entrance examinations. In general, it has a high acceptance rate of 80%. As such, it has a student population of around 25,000 and about 2,000 staff and professors. With a mission to develop and maintain a global status, it hones a multilingual and multicultural academic society.
Tuition fees for bachelor’s degree programs cost around 5,000 USD per year. Although tuition costs are relatively low compared to other institutions of its caliber, the university gives students a chance to participate in scholarship programs to further aid them financially.Read Less...
