Facts About University of Padova

The University of Padua (UNIPD) is a public research university located in Italy. Known in Italian as Università degli Studi di Padova, it is the country’s second-oldest university and the fifth-oldest in the world that is still in operation. As an autonomous coeducational institution, it has been ranked the best university in the country several times.

The university is thought to have been founded in 1222, the earliest time it was cited in a historical document. It was originally established as a school of law by a group of students and academics from the University of Bologna who were seeking more academic freedom. Aside from law, the school first taught theology. The course offerings and curriculum quickly expanded. Soon, the university started offering Canon Law, Civil Law, Medicine, Astronomy, Philosophy, Rhetoric, and Grammar.

Between the 15th and 18th centuries, the institution became known for its research activities and capabilities, particularly in the fields of Astronomy, Medicine, Law, and Philosophy. It is around this time when the institution adopted the motto, “Universa universis patavina libertas.” The Latin phrase means “Paduan freedom is universal for everyone.”

Today, the University of Padua is divided into more than 30 departments, which are further divided into eight schools: (1) Engineering, (2) Law, (3) Sciences, (4) Psychology, (5) Agriculture Science and Veterinary Medicine, (6) Medicine and Surgery, (7) Economics and Political Sciences, and (8) Human and Social Sciences, and Cultural Heritage.

As one of the world’s leading research universities, the University of Padua has been contributing to global change and development. Aside from providing high-quality undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs, the university also runs multiple research centers and organizations, as well as various science and technology hubs. The University of Padua is also home to a fully-equipped library, a museum, and a university hospital. Furthermore, to better cater to the needs of students, it manages 14 residence halls.

As of 2020, the University of Padua educates an estimated 60,000 students, two-thirds of which are undergraduates, while the remaining population is composed of graduates/postgraduates. The students share the university facilities with about 20,000 staff and professors.

To uphold its goals, the university maintains affiliations and partnerships with prominent international universities and academic associations. The University of Padua is part of the prestigious Coimbra Group, whose members include the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge.

Over the centuries, the University of Padua has already produced a number of notable alumni. These include the Polish mathematician Nicolaus Copernicus, English physician William Harvey, and Italian-American inventor Federico Faggin.
