Facts About University of Mons

The University of Mons is a French-speaking university located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. Also known as UMONS, the university is the result of the merger between the Engineering Faculty of Mons and the University of Mons-Hainaut. UMONs has a small student population of more than 5,000 students. Despite its small size, the university’s academic reputation and dedication to research goes beyond the campus and even national borders.

As a research-intensive university, UMONS houses 10 research institutes and 1,000-plus researchers committed to making groundbreaking discoveries in the areas of science and technology, human and social sciences, and life sciences and health. Each research institute is dedicated to a specific field of study, including biosciences, complex systems, energy, materials science and engineering, and more. All research works are conducted by teams of experienced and postdoctoral researchers, as well as PhD holders from different faculties.

As an academic institution, UMONS offers more than 100 courses across seven faculties, which include the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacy, Science, Psychology and Education, and others. UMONS also has three schools that focus on law, human and social sciences, and teacher training. Globally, UMONS makes its presence known through citations in international scientific publications, which help rank UMONS among the best universities not only in Belgium but in the whole world. In 2016, UMONS had approximately 400 research projects, more than 2,000 publications with approximately 700 references.

Although UMONS was established in 2009, its history can be traced as far back as 1837 when the Faculty of Engineering of Mons was founded. Meanwhile, the University of Mons-Hainaut had been in existence since 1965 before merging with the former to create the University of Mons. The merger was part of the restructuring plan for higher education in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, and UMONS became one of the federation’s five academic centers of the French community in Belgium.

UMONS also works closely with its associated centers—the Centre for Research in Information and Communication Technologies (CETIC) and the MULTITEL Innovation Center. MULTITEL is a research facility founded by the old Engineering Faculty of Mons. The research center works on telecommunications, signal, and image processing technology. CETIC, on the other hand, is a collaboration between UMONS and two other Belgian universities—the Université catholique de Louvain, and the University of Namur. UMONS has also established strong partnerships with other organizations, such as hospitals, finance companies, and others.
