Facts About University of Pavia

The University of Pavia (UNIPV) is believed to be one of the world’s oldest universities. Many think that it is the institution for higher education in Pavia mentioned in an edict by King Lothar I way back in AD 825. Moreover, there are also historical accounts that teaching took place in its halls way back in 1361 as well.

The institution started as the main educational center for northern Italy and its main focus was in ecclesiastical, divinity, and civil law studies. During the time of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV in 1361, the institution became a place for studium generale or general studies. The university began teaching medicine, philosophy, canon and civil law, and liberal arts. Since then, it has grown to become a well-respected university, offering a wide variety of courses. Also, it remained as the only university in the Greater Lombardy region and Milan until the 19th century.

Today, UNIPV has nine faculties and 18 departments. University faculties include the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and the Faculty of Engineering. UNIPV departments include the Department of Law, Department of Neuroscience, Department of Philosophy, Department of Physics, Department of Mathematics, and the Department of Humanities.

These faculties and departments offer a total of 77 courses in Italian. Thirty-nine of these are for bachelor’s degrees and 38 are for master’s courses. As well, there are 19 PhD courses available. Additionally, 12 master’s degree courses are offered in English

In research, UNIPV espouses an interdisciplinary approach. This applies to the hard and soft sciences, arts, and humanities. For instance, research efforts in the Department of Physics are interdisciplinary in the sense that applied physics projects are directed to strategic use in nano-bio-medical physics, radiation protection, radiobiology, and even cultural heritage. In addition, research undertakings are also performed in the areas of science education, the history of physics, and scientific museology.

The university offers resources and facilities that enhance students’ academic and cultural learning. UNIPV has two campuses and 20 university colleges for housing. It also operates 35 libraries, housing more than 1.2 million journals and books. On the cultural side of student development, the university offers facilities, including four cinemas and theaters, 19 museums and collections, a music college, two civic schools for arts and music, and 12 cultural centers. UNIPV sports services include 15 soccer pitches, three private sports clubs, and two multi-sport centers, among many others.

Throughout its long and rich history, the University of Pavia has been called home by academics and graduates that had valuable contributions to their fields. The list includes Carlo Rubbia, a Nobel laureate, the mathematician Luigi Cremona, and Alessandro Volta, who is famous for creating the first battery.
