Facts About Ngee Ann Polytechnic

Ngee Ann Polytechnic is a Singapore-based postsecondary institution, the second oldest polytechnic academy in the country. Located in the town of Clementi, a residential and urban planning area in Singapore’s West Region, Ngee Ann Polytechnic is also the first academic institution in the country to launch mobile elearning, a sophisticated elearning platform, and a wireless campus network.

As a polytechnic institution, Ngee Ann Polytechnic focuses on applied learning using advanced technologies to help students learn and adapt to industry standard practices, which gives them an advantage in terms of having real-life work experience even before they graduate. The programs offered are divided into nine schools that administer a wide range of studies, which include business and accountancy, engineering, life sciences and chemical technology, design and environment, and more.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic, originally named Ngee Ann College, was established in 1963 and took the name of its founder, the Ngee Ann Kongsi, a charity organization based in Singapore. The vision behind the establishment of Ngee Ann College was for the Chinese-speaking community in the country to remain connected to their Chinese culture. During its early years, Ngee Ann College offered commerce, language, and technology as its core programs.

Five years later, Ngee Ann College became Ngee Ann Technical College, which reflected the change in its focus to providing technical education instead. In 1982, the institution was renamed Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the programs offered were changed once more to practical courses and more focus on hands-on training. In 1999, Ngee Ann Polytechnic pioneered mobile elearning and a wireless campus network, accompanied by a Notebook Ownership Scheme, which equipped the students with notebook computers to utilize as their elearning platform.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s rapid growth paved the way for the establishment of more facilities that further showcase the institution’s technological expertise. Among these facilities are the 1,800-seat, two-level Convention Center, the Marine and Offshore Technology Centre of Innovation built in partnership with SPRING Singapore, statutory board operating under Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry.

In 2008, Ngee Ann Polytechnic launched two of its most ambitious projects. The first was a $1 million Solar Technology Centre, which became the hub for students’ projects and applied research on solar technology. The second was the Environmental and Water Technology Centre of Innovation, a $7.6 million project meant to help small- and medium-sized businesses develop products to improve waste and water management, pollution control, and promote clean energy—a further testament to its efforts that are geared toward environmental preservation and sustainability.
