Facts About Autonomous University of Madrid

The Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) is one of the most prominent tertiary education institutions in Spain. This public university is known for its research strength and for maintaining high teaching standards. Collaborating with three other top Spanish universities in its research projects, it is also a member of the European University Association. Moreover, UAM is known as a university of celebration as it hosts several festivals and concerts each year.

UAM organized its academics into eight faculties namely, the faculties of (1) Law, (2) Philosophy and Liberal Arts, (3) Psychology Superior Polytechnic School, (4) Teacher Training and Education, (5) Economical Science and Business Management, (6) Sciences, (7) Medicine, and (8) Engineering. These are further divided into 59 departments. Outside of its faculties are associate schools in Spain that grant degrees recognized by the university. UAM follows a semester-based calendar and primarily teaches in Spanish while also offering courses taught in English. Additionally, it houses eight research centers.

UAM offers numerous undergraduate degrees across a wide range of fields, over 70 master’s programs, and more than 90 doctoral degrees. Its highly regarded courses include mathematics, sports-related subjects, psychology, modern languages, natural sciences, physics, and archaeology.

UAM’s main campus in the Cantoblanco area occupies around 650 acres and is home to most of the school’s major facilities. Many of the buildings are characterized by their long staircases, interconnected patios, and contemporary designs. The university has a broad range of sports facilities, around 16 dining places, a number of clinics, a pharmacy, a dormitory, and a public transportation network. North of Madrid is UAM’s two other campuses, one for medicine and another for conferences and summer courses.

Established in 1968, UAM was founded on the premise of Spain’s economic boom in the 1960s, which propelled the nation’s demand for higher education. The university’s development was enacted through a decree sanctioned by Spain’s ministers as they planned to restructure the country’s university system.

UAM, as of 2020, opens its doors to over 20,000 undergraduates, 6,000 postgraduates, 3,000 doctoral students, 2,000 faculty members, and 1,000 administrative personnel. The university is associated with a Nobel laureate and was instrumental in the schooling of members of the Spanish Royal Family. Its notable alumni include King Felipe VI of Spain, Queen Sofia of Spain, Irene Montero (Spanish minister), Dolores Delgado (prosecutor), and Macarena Garcia (actress).

UAM intends to maintain the comprehensive training it imparts to students, which, besides academics, touches on civics, cultural appreciation, and creating sustainable environments. To make this possible, the university has partnered with non-governmental organizations, local companies, and government units. It also has an entrepreneurial program designed to help students establish their own businesses.
