Halmstad University is a public university located in Halmstad, Sweden, that has been in existence since 1983. Guided by its motto “The Innovation-Driven University,” it is a leading higher education institution focused on cutting-edge areas that will make an impact today and in the years to come. The university’s mission-vision is to add value, drive innovation, and prepare people and society for the future.

Halmstad University offers two-year university diplomas, three-year bachelor’s degrees, and one- and two-year master’s degrees. Subject areas for study include media, business, engineering, informatics, environmental science, and welfare. In addition, they offer non-degree courses in network design and security; media, communications, and lifestyle; and research and applied work in sport and exercise psychology. Their programs are taught across four academies: health and welfare; information technology; learning, humanities, and society; and entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainability.

Halmstad University was formally opened as an independent university in 1983. This happened shortly after the Swedish parliament identified Halmstad as the site of a higher education institution. In 1994, it was granted permission to award master’s degrees. The university underwent reorganization in 2000 and interdisciplinary schools were formed. From 2007 to 2009, other degrees were added to its master’s programs. Halmstad University rethought its identity and strengthened international collaborations in the years that followed, which led to its innovation-focused direction today.

Halmstad University is one of the top universities in the city and in Sweden. It is one of the few universities in the country to be given a KK Environment recognition by the Foundation for Knowledge and Skills Development. This is in recognition of its internationally competitive research environment. In addition, it has been ranked as among the top 800 universities in the world.

In the next decade, Halmstad University aims to give students a high-quality university experience and foster a creative and innovative environment with an international perspective. It likewise aims to create mutually beneficial regional, national, and international collaboration.

Halmstad University will be joining four other universities in opening a new industry research school called Smart Industry Sweden. This graduate school will allow companies to build linkages with doctoral students for conducting research and exploring business opportunities in the Smart Industry field. The university has also launched Lead for Life, an innovation center that will leverage artificial intelligence to bring a personalized health care experience. This joint project with the region and municipalities of Halland brings new life to the Centre for Health Technology Halland (HCH), which is co-owned by the university.
