Facts About University of Cagliari

Based in Italy, the University of Cagliari is one of the largest higher education institutions in the Sardinia region and is known for its heritage and programs in neuroscience and computer science. This public university is also characterized by its five-hectare botanical garden, the Orto Botanico dellÚniversita di Cagliari, which contains about 2,000 species of plants, most of which are Mediterranean plants, tropical plants, and succulents.

Cagliari is organized into six faculties and 15 departments, focusing on disciplines like the sciences, humanities, engineering, pharmacy, and medicine. It offers 38 undergraduate, 38 graduate, and 15 doctoral programs. Meanwhile, international learners can enroll in the two English-taught double degree programs. The school’s most highly regarded courses include engineering, computer science, physics, clinical medicine, and neuroscience and behavior.

Research at Cagliari is conducted in its 21 centers, covering a wide spectrum of knowledge areas, including psychology, biodiversity, engineering, mobility, and medicine. As of 2020, it has over 30 projects funded by domestic and international organizations as well as 34 projects prepared through the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 program. Meanwhile, its innovation center has produced around 49 spinoffs and 28 business ideas.

The University of Cagliari has several campuses in Sardinia, with the main one in the city of Cagliari. The main campus has numerous student amenities such as residence halls, museums, sports facilities, dining places, and a library network that carries 847,000 volumes. Students have easy access to the city’s special features, too. As such, they can experience festivals and visit places of interest like Poetto Beach, which has seven kilometers of white sand.

Recognized by Pope Paul V in 1606 and established by Spanish king Philip III in 1626, the University of Cagliari was initially patterned after the universities in Spain as it specialized in theology, medicine, laws, arts, and philosophy. Over the centuries, it received expansions both in property and educational capital. The school was badly damaged during World War II but has since recovered and even established a campus in Monserrato.

As of 2020, Cagliari welcomes over 25,200 students and 1,000 academic staff. It has amassed over 940 continental Erasmus agreements and 105 international ones, as it collaborates with universities from countries all over the world. The university has also attracted distinguished faculty the likes of philosopher Paolo Rossi, statistician Corrado Gini, and politician Oliviero Diliberto.

Cagliari’s notable alumni include Oliviero Diliberto (politician), Giuseppe Brotzu (pharmacologist), Eva Mameli (botanist), Massimo Zeda (politician), Paolo Truzzu (politician), and Geppi Cucciari (comedian).

Cagliari aims to contribute to the economic, intellectual, and social growth of its regional community through education and research. It also aspires to attract more international learners and gain world recognition for its competencies.
