Facts About York University, Canada

York University is the third largest university in Canada. Its main campus is located in the city of Toronto, province of Ontario, Canada. A public research university, York University operates three campuses. Keele Campus, the main campus, houses the majority of faculties such as fine arts, business, science and engineering, and others. Glendon Campus is the federated bilingual campus and where the first permanent establishment of the university—the Glendon College— is located. Last is the Markham Centre Campus, which is still an ongoing project that would be located in Marham City.

As a public research university, York University has been noted as one of Canada’s leading research institutions based on scholarly citations. It houses the oldest film school in the country, which rivals other renowned film schools in North America, such as New York University’s Tisch School of Arts and the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. York University is also home to the oldest and largest faculty of environmental studies in the country. It once offered the largest graphic design program in Canada in cooperation with Sheridan College Program in Design until the program was discontinued in 2018 to make way for York University’s own four-year undergraduate graphic design program. Other academic programs offered by York University include law, chemistry, education, science and technology, and more.

York University’s history began in 1959 when it was established as a non-denominational academic institution under the York University Act. The first class opened in 1960, conducted in the Falconer Hall of the University of Toronto. The following year, the class moved to its first official campus, the Glendon College, where liberal arts became the main focus of studies and part-time classes were offered to the students. The Keele Campus opened in 1965 and later on became the main campus with more than 55,000 students enrolled. Markham Centre, on the hand, was first planned in 2014 but the construction was delayed several times due to issues in funding. The construction of Markham Centre Campus eventually resumed and it is expected to be fully operational by the fall of 2023 and ready to accommodate 4,200 students.

York University continues to pursue growth in its dedication to research by seeking partnerships with organizations, such as the World Wildlife Fund, Global Footprint Network, and corporations like IBM. Anchored on its core institutional value of intensive engagement in research activities and projects, York University remains committed to finding ways to apply new knowledge to the improvement of the human condition and society as a whole.
