Facts About University of Granada

The University of Granada (UGR), a public university in Spain, is the fourth largest in the country and one of the most popular destinations of European students. Founded in 1531 by Emperor Charles V, the university is located in Granada with campuses in Melilia and Ceuta in North Africa. It approximately hosts 80,000 students, including students from the European Union, North America and other parts of the world.

UGR consistently ranks among the best universities in the world for research and academics in computing and mathematics. Likewise, its Center for Modern Languages is highly regarded, with UGR’s Translation and Interpreting studies earning commendations worldwide. The university offers master’s degrees, doctoral programs and other postgraduate studies following the European model. These include Master’s in Arts and Humanities, Master’s in Technology, Engineering and Architecture, Master’s in Interdisciplinary Programmes and Ph.D. in Health Sciences, Ph.D. in Science, Technology and Engineering and Ph.D. in Humanities, Social Sciences and Law.

The institution counts among its alumni notable personalities in the fields of arts, music, journalism, politics and social studies: Francisco de Paula Martinez de la Rosa (statesman, dramatist), Joaquin Sabina (poet, singer and composer), Nicolas Salemron y Alonso (president of the First Spanish Republic), Niceto Alcala-Zamora (president of the Second Spanish Republic) and Manuel Gomez-Moreno Martinez (historian, archaeologist).

The university traces its roots to 1526 when a college was established to offer studies in philosophy, logic, canon law and theology. But the official founding year is in 1531, when the college was granted by Pope Clement VII with a papal bull. In 1992, the university started accepting international students through its School for Languages or Centro de Lenguas Modernas. To date, UGR has official ties with around 20 educational institutions in North America, including the University of Delaware, American Institute for Foreign Study, Arcadia University and International Studies Abroad.

Today, UGR consists of five schools, 116 departments and 22 faculties spread across Granada, in Cartuja, Fuentenueva, Centro, Ciencias de la Salud and Aynadamar and its two campuses in Spanish territories in North Africa.

Most of the schools and faculty are located in its Granada campuses. On the other hand, the Ceuta campus hosts the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Education and Humanities, while the Melilla campus has the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Nursing and the Faculty of Education, Economy and Technology.

The Granada Health Science Technological Park, a housing and facilities area, is the latest addition to the university campus, dedicated to teaching, health care, business development and research.
