The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia traces its roots to the University of Modena, established in 1175. Its first school was the School of Law and, throughout the next two centuries, this school was joined by institutes focused on the study of medicine and the training of notaries. By 1772, the university was offering degrees in such disciplines as pharmacy, physical and natural sciences, and mathematics. In the same year, the university also received sole rights to grant degrees, which had been taken away from the University of Reggio due to educational reforms in Italy. The two universities have since combined into the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and the university maintains campuses in these two Italian cities to this day.
Throughout its long history, the university has been home to some notable scientists and scholars, including historian Ludovico Antonio Muratori, playwright Carlo Goldoni, and founder of occupational medicine Bernardino Ramazzini. The university plans to promote research in various scientific areas, including advanced mechanics and automotive design, regenerative medicine, sustainable technologies, and smart ICT. Research at the university is also supported by various firms and corporations in the area.
