Unimore currently offers over 80 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs in diverse fields of study, including society and culture, health sciences, and technology. Double degrees and joint degrees are also available at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to these programs, Unimore is home to numerous specialization schools, which focus on disciplinary areas such as medicine and surgery, law, and chemical and pharmaceutical science. Students can also pursue short vocational master programs.

The university offers various educational opportunities and services for international students as well. Unimore provides a number of English-taught master's programs and participates in over 300 international exchange agreements. The university also has a University Language Center that offers free Italian language classes to students.

The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia traces its roots to the University of Modena, established in 1175. Its first school was the School of Law and, throughout the next two centuries, this school was joined by institutes focused on the study of medicine and the training of notaries. By 1772, the university was offering degrees in such disciplines as pharmacy, physical and natural sciences, and mathematics. In the same year, the university also received sole rights to grant degrees, which had been taken away from the University of Reggio due to educational reforms in Italy. The two universities have since combined into the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and the university maintains campuses in these two Italian cities to this day.

Throughout its long history, the university has been home to some notable scientists and scholars, including historian Ludovico Antonio Muratori, playwright Carlo Goldoni, and founder of occupational medicine Bernardino Ramazzini. Unimore remains committed to advanced, high-quality research today, being ranked as one of the top Italian universities for research. The university plans to promote research in various scientific areas, including advanced mechanics and automotive design, regenerative medicine, sustainable technologies, and smart ICT. Research at the university is also supported by various firms and corporations in the area.

The university currently maintains 16 interdisciplinary research centers, numerous libraries, as well as a 260-year-old botanical garden. The university is also part of the High Technology Regional Network of Emilia-Romagna, with two technopoles in Modena and Reggio Emilia.
