Facts About Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Huazhong University of Science and Technology, or HUST, is a double first class university based in the Hubei Province of China, and is well recognized as one of the country’s top 10 universities. As one of China’s key universities, it is one of the two recipients of the University Leadership Award given by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. HUST is also one of the four universities qualified to run China’s national laboratory and major science and technology infrastructure.

Globally, HUST’s rank varies depending on the publication. The U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking ranks HUST in the 260th place. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), on the other hand, has placed HUST between 101st to 200th in the world. Meanwhile, Times Higher Education ranks HUST in the 351st to 400th globally.

HUST’s academic programs belong to the top 1% disciplines according to the Essential Science Indicators. These programs are spread across three core departments, namely Science and Engineering, Art and Humanities, and Medicine. Some of the programs offered include mechanical science and engineering, materials science, basic medicine, chemistry, molecular biology, law, and others. All in all, HUST offers more than 350 programs, including master’s and PhD.

HUST was founded after the Chinese Civil War, part of the Central Government of China’s plan for a new higher education system. HUST became one of the three institutes established in the capital city of Hubei along with the South-Central China Institute of Power Engineering and the South-Central China Institute of Water Conservancy and Electric Power. HUST officially opened in 1953 and became the official administrator of all programs related to power engineering.

Over the years, HUST grew as other institutions merged with the university. These institutions are Wuhan Mechanical Institute, Wuhan Urban Construction Institute, Tongji Medical University, and Wuhan Science and Technology Vocational College. The merger completely transformed HUST into a multi-disciplinary research institution.

When it comes to research facilities, HUST houses some of China’s most sophisticated laboratories, including the Wuhan National Laboratories for Opto-electronics, which is one of the five national laboratories in China. There is also the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center, which is one of the four leading centers of its kind in the world. Other research centers are the National Engineering Laboratory, National Professional Laboratory, and more.
