Facts About University of Amsterdam

The University of Amsterdam, or UvA, is the largest university in the Netherlands and one of the two publicly-funded research universities in the city of Amsterdam. UvA has been placed in the top 100 universities by reputable publications, including QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education. In terms of programs offered, UvA places among the top 10 universities when it comes to humanities and social sciences. Aside from being one of the largest research-oriented universities, UvA is also the most prolific, publishing nearly 8,000 scientific publications in 2010 alone.

UvA’s academic programs are offered in Dutch and in English, and you can take them either full time or on a part-time basis. Among these are bachelor’s degree programs, such as social sciences, law and governance, child development, communications and media, interdisciplinary programs, and more. Postgraduate students are also offered the same full time and part-time options to complete their programs. When it comes to postgraduate studies, you can go for Research Master’s, Dual Master’s, Advanced Master’s, and others. The areas of discipline include American history, archaeology, heritage studies, artificial intelligence, and others.

Historically, UvA’s founding can be traced as far back as 1632. It was first launched as Athenaeum Illustre, which attracted a few dozens students in its early years. In 1815, the name Athenaeum Illustre was replaced with the University of Amsterdam, following its status as a fledgling university. By the 1950s, the student population in UvA grew from a few dozens to 25,000.

Presently, the UvA campus is divided into five main locations. The City Centre houses the school administration and majority of the faculties. It is also where the famous canal ring, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is located. The Science Park Amsterdam is where the science facilities, research centers, and student housing are placed. Two other locations are dedicated to medicine and dentistry faculties and facilities. Lastly, the Roeterseiland Campus runs the Social and Behavioural Sciences and the Faculties of Economics and Business, as well as an open area designed to accommodate future facilities.

As a research facility, UvA is committed to uncovering novel ideas across a broad range of topics. UvA does not limit its research capabilities within the institution: it establishes partnership with other organizations, such as private businesses and even the government, to accomplish projects that can leave a positive impact in the society and the world.
