Facts About University of Liège

Also known as ULiège, the University of Liège is a top-tier public university based in Liège, Wallonia, Belgium, for the French Community in the country. The university was founded by William I of the Netherlands and Anton Reinhard Falck, his minister of education. Long considered to be the new Athens because of the reputation of its medieval schools, the city earned the university it deserved.

From its inception, the university has helped cultivate great people with important contributions to their fields. Notable ULiège alumni and figures include physicist and mathematician Joseph Plateau, writer and curator Max Rooses, biologist Jean-Christophe Marine, and historian Paul Fredericq.

The university’s first charter as decreed by Napoleon I in 1808 called for the institution to be composed of the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Arts. Today, ULiège has 11 faculties composed of their own departments overseeing teaching and research activities.

The faculties include the Faculty of Social Science, Faculty of Psychology, Logopedics, and Educational Studies, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Applied Science, the Faculty of Medicine, and the famed HEC Liège Management School. Currently, ULiège engages in advanced research in 17 domains. These include areas such as climate and environment, biotechnology, space, energy, nanotechnology, security, and transports and logistics, among others. Research centers include the Smart City Institute, the Tax Institute, and the European Center for Archaeometry.

Currently, the University of Liège is part of the open innovation movement. It collaborates with the business world by offering access to its laboratories and its techniques. Research clusters include Mecatech for materials and solid mechanics research and Skywin for applications of technologies like wind turbines and drones.
