Facts About University of Tabriz
The University of Tabriz is a public university located in the city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran. Established in 1947, the university is the second-oldest higher education institution in the country. It is also among the top-ranking universities in Iran and one of the most selective. Admission into the university is through an annual national exam conducted by Iran's Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (MSRT). Admission is also limited to the top one percent of the students who pass the national exam.
The academic structure of the University of Tabriz consists of 19 faculties including the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering; the Faculty of Education and Psychology; the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences; the Faculty of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering; the Faculty of Agriculture; and the Faculty of Persian and Foreign Languages.
Students can choose from 102 bachelor’s programs, 187 master’s programs, and 128 doctoral programs spread across the four campuses—the main campus located in Tabriz, the Aras International Campus, the Miyaneh Technical College, and the Marand Technical College.
Aside from its degree programs, the University of Tabriz also maintains several centers for its research activities. These include the Center of Excellence in Mechatronics Systems; the Biotechnology Center for Pharmaceutical Herbs; the Geographic Research Center; and the Center for Applied Physics and Astronomical Research. It is recognized for its research in the fields of biology, mechatronics, geography (especially in Northwest Iran), and molecular plant breeding.
The original name of the University of Tabriz was the University of Azarabadegan. It opened its doors with only three faculties: Faculties of Pedagogy, Agriculture, and Medicine. After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the University of Azarabadegan changed its name to the University of Tabriz.
Today, the University of Tabriz is one of the most prestigious universities in Iran and educates more than 14,000 students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The university’s academic staff is composed of more than 800 teachers who work side by side with the university’s more than 1,000 staff. It is also working on building cultural and scientific links with international universities such as Turkey Middle East Industrial University (METU) and the University of Birmingham School of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering.
The university has produced notable alumni in a variety of fields such as politics, journalism, chemistry, and literature. They include Iranian writer Samad Behrangi; Iranian journalist Faraj Sarkohi; Iranian politician and former vice president, Ali Saeedlou; and chemist and father of polymer science of Iran, Ali Akbar Entezami.Read Less...
